one example from the university of Kentucky - scope change and our role in the process

Having looked at several examples of effective Community Supported Agriculture I now realise that the boat needs to be pushed out.

Though the sea may be choppy and the rocks not far below there is huge scope for real and radical change in the way we think about food and our own role in the process.

This is just one example from the university of Kentucky who run a large CSA project for their students and locals.

"The cost of a share includes the once a week share for 22 weeks and access to u-pick crops at the farm, as noted in the weekly newsletters. For Faculty & Staff, the cost of a share is $605 (just under £400, or £18 per week). Students receive a $100 discount for a total of $505."

".... a part of the UK College of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, and is an integral component of the Sustainable Agriculture (SAG) Undergraduate Curriculum. The CSA project links faculty, staff, and students from the UK community with the Organic Farming Unit located at the UK Horticulture Research Farm. The CSA project is not a commercial farm and is not managed for profit. All financial proceeds from the sale of CSA shares support the production of food during the growing season and student educational activities of the SAG program. All faculty, staff and students of the UK community are invited to sign-up for one or both of our share types briefly described below."

Community Supported Agriculture Project

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project is a part of the UK College of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture,

Farmigo. Members will be responsible for using the sign-up link provided
on our website, choosing a payment plan, and managing any additional payments
through this system. Detailed instructions on how to navigate Farmigo follow below.
• Membership will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
• The 2013 season will be 22 weeks. The first distribution date is scheduled for Thursday,
May 30th and the last distribution date is scheduled for Thursday, October 24th. Note: due
to unforeseen circumstances in Spring weather, we have had to reschedule the start date
in the past, but the season-length (22 weeks of produce) will always remain the same.
• Distribution is currently scheduled for Thursdays from 4-6pm in the parking lot of the E.S.
Good Barn. We may extend this from 3:30-6:30 depending on how distribution works
integrated with our Flex Share. This is the only time that weekly shares will be available
and produce will not be stored for later distribution. Share distribution will take place rain
or shine unless genuinely catastrophic weather or another natural disaster intercedes.
You will be notified in advance (preferably through e-mail) should distribution be
cancelled.
• The cost of a share is the product of the average cost of produce in the share and the
number of weeks for which the season lasts. The cost of a share includes the once a
week share for 22 weeks and access to u-pick crops at the farm, as noted in the weekly
newsletters. For Faculty & Staff, the cost of a share is $605. Students receive a $100
discount for a total of $505. You must use the coupon code: “Student” when registering to
receive this discount.
• Although full payment at the start of the season is encouraged and appreciated, you may
spread your payments over three separate installments during the season. If paying in
installments, the initial first payment is due immediately to reserve your share, the second
will be due May 15th and the third will be due July 1st. These installments will be
automatically charged to your credit card if you choose to pay by card. If you choose to
pay by check, please remember prompt payment of installments is necessary for the farm
to operate.
• It is the members’ responsibility to open and read the emails sent to them regarding their
share (including payment notices) and pay in a prompt manner.
• The member assumes complete responsibility for picking up their share. If a member is
unable to pick-up their share, please make arrangements to have someone pick up the
share and check off the member’s name on the sign-in sheet.
• You will not be able to cancel a membership once the season begins.
• Any questions or concerns can be addressed to the CSA Manager at:
csamanager @uky.edu
WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT IN YOUR SHARE
Because shares contain the freshest produce available and because there is no way to precisely
predict growing conditions during a season, we won’t know the actual content of a share until it’s
time for the weekly harvest. That being said, the average weekly share will be a variety of 6-12
items, ¾-1 bushel in size, weighing between 6-16 lbs (avg. 12 lbs). This amount of produce
should provide for a small family (2-3) of non-vegetarians. Based on a typical growing season,
you should expect to find these items in your share:
May: salad mix, broccoli, radishes, arugula, spinach, Chinese greens, kale, collards,
kohlrabi, turnips
June: beets, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, green onions,
squash/zucchini, radishes
July: basil, beets, corn, carrots, tomatoes, greens, melons, onions,
garlic, eggplant, bell peppers, hot peppers, yellow squash and zucchini, green beans,
tomatoes
August: basil, green beans, corn, melons, onions, garlic, peppers, eggplant,
squash/zucchini, tomatoes,
September: corn, salad mix, basil, beets, corn, melons, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes,
tomatoes, yellow squash and zucchini, winter squash, turnips, braising mix, greens
October: salad mix, braising mix, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, onions, potatoes, sweet
potatoes, spinach, winter squash, greens, turnips, radishes, arugula
Please keep in mind that a core principle of the CSA concept is the shared commitment between
the farm and members. This means that members not only share in the bounty of the farm but
also in potential problems that may arise during the growing season. For example, an extended
period of drought or a serious insect infestation may mean that the quantities of certain produce
are reduced or even eliminated from a weekly share. The farm production team will attempt all
reasonable strategies to avoid such situations but shareholders should be aware that there are no
“refunds” or “rebates” of share prices. In addition to your share of produce, you will also receive a
weekly emailed newsletter containing seasonal recipes, farm updates, news about the SAG
program and other fun tidbits.

Full CSA Share:
Our traditional Full CSA Share is where members receive a weekly share of vegetables for 22 weeks from May 30th – October 24th, 2013.  A share will feed a family of 2-3 non-vegetarians.  For more information, download our 2013 Full CSA Share Terms.  You must agree to the terms listed within this document before registering, including instructions for a $100 student discount.
Registration now open for 2013!

Shares are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We will update the website when shares are sold-out for 2013.
Been a member for 3 or more years?  Please consider supporting another CSA on a local farm.  One goal of the UK CSA Project is to build the customer base for local farms and expand the CSA movement in our region.  Visit www.localharvest.org to search for a CSA farm in the area.
CSA Flex Share:
The CSA Flex Share is customizable, offering smaller quantities of select items on a first-come, first serve basis.  This gives members the flexibility to build their own share on a week-to-week basis but will not be able to offer the consistent availability (as quantities will be limited and may sell out) or variety (sometimes as few as 3-4 options) that our Full CSA Share provides.  This is perfect for those who wish to support our programming, but do not wish to be a Full CSA Share member. For more information, download the 2013 CSA Flex Share Terms.  You must agree to the terms listed in this document before participating.
NEW for 2013: all Flex Share members will be required to pay upon checkout, and delivery has moved to Thursdays at the same time as our Full CSA Share.  Simply visit the webstore below and complete your order to participate.
