6. Case Studies
Stroud Community Agriculture (SCA)
Location & area of land Stroud, Gloucestershire, 50 acres
When did the project start? 2001
No. of workers/volunteers employing 2 full time farmer/growers
paying for a part-time treasurer and
membership administrator
Aim of the project
The aim of SCA is to integrate community and agriculture by managing a mixed,
sustainable and environmentally responsible farm for the benefit of everyone
involved. The SCA vision is to support a small farm business to thrive by having
direct commitment from local supporters. We hope to develop a rich diversity of
livestock, crops and wildlife that will change and develop with the opportunities
and interests of the support community and land workers.
The support community is made up of local people who commit to meet the
needs of the land and land workers so they can achieve their fullest potential.
The community sets up and participates in a lively programme of activities to
provide enjoyment and understanding of the farm and feel as responsible for it
as the land workers.
SCA is managed by an elected ‘core group’ of volunteers who meet once a
month. We hold public meetings to discuss the direction of the farm and it was
at one of the first public meetings that the principles for the project were drawn
up. It was agreed at that time that SCA wanted to be fully inclusive and that low
income should not exclude anyone, as well as to encourage practical
involvement on all levels.
